What does an aurora have to do with a power failure?
Every month, the Joseph-Fourier University Library hosts a workshop to promote scientific culture: la science infuse.
Join Mathieu Barthelemy, astrophysicist at the Institut de planétologie et d'astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG-OSUG) and director of the Centre spatial universitaire de Grenoble (CSUG), on February 18 to discover the polar aurora.
Polar aurorae are the most spectacular aspect of the relationship between the Sun and the Earth. However, while they create magnificent light emissions, the solar wind causes disruption to satellites, telecommunications and power grids. In this talk, we will attempt to describe and understand the mechanisms by which these auroras are formed, and the links between them and these disturbances.
