Gathering Memories: Stories of Women, Men, and Plants in the Alps
ConferenceScientific and technical culture
May 19, 2026Saint-Martin-d'Hères - University Campus
Every month, the Joseph-Fourier University Library hosts a workshop to promote scientific culture: *La science infuse*.
With the arrival of spring, we invite you to hear Aline Mercan, ananthropologist and ethnobotanist, speakabout the traditional uses of mountain plants.
The JDMM (Jardins de mémoire de montagnes) association has been collecting ethnobotanical knowledge and practices in the Alps since 2009, in partnership with regional nature parks (PNR), local communities, and the Joseph Fourier Alpine Station. These practices share specific characteristics common to these regions, but also exhibit significant local variations that reveal the full complexity of this knowledge, transmitted orally, which is gradually disappearing as these societies evolve. Through a few examples of emblematic plants, this lecture will illustrate both the relationship with the plant world and the functioning of these societies, as well as their recent evolution.
