Every month, the Joseph-Fourier University Library hosts a workshop to promote scientific culture: “La science infuse.”

Jean-Luc Cracowski, a professor of pharmacology and hospital practitioner at the University of Grenoble Alpes and president of the National College of Medical Pharmacology, shares his expertise on the risk-benefit balance of a drug. 

The benefits of a drug are evaluated in clinical trials. However, when a drug is first brought to market, its rare adverse effects may not yet be known and require monitoring through the pharmacovigilance system. How can we balance bringing effective drugs to market within a reasonable timeframe with the analysis of their risks? Does the image of a scale used to evaluate the benefits and risks of drugs make sense? The experience with COVID-19 will be used to illustrate these concepts
