Why is it so hard to give up driving?

Conference Scientific and technical culture
22, September 2026Saint-Martin-d'Hères - University Campus
A conference as part of Mobility Month
Every month, the Joseph-Fourier University Library hosts a workshop to promote scientific culture: “La science infuse.”
To mark Mobility Month, we’re inviting Clément Ginoux, an associate professor of psychology of physical activity and a member of the Sport and Social Environment (SENS) laboratory, to talk to us about the InterMob project.

The InterMob project addresses the issue of changing mobility practices in the Grenoble metropolitan area. An intervention study was conducted over a 24-month period with more than 100 volunteers who wanted to reduce their car use in favor of alternative modes of transportation that are less polluting and more physically active. The originality of the study’s protocol lies in its interdisciplinary approach, which considers a variety of geographic, psychological, and economic factors in the observation and analysis of change processes. The study also seeks to assess the health benefits of modal shift in terms of individual exposure to fine particulate matter, physical activity levels, and well-being.

During this discussion session, participants will have the opportunity to review the study protocol, the challenges involved in its implementation, and the initial results that have been analyzed.
